Sourdough for Beginners: From Starter to Loaf

There’s something magical about sourdough—the way a simple mix of flour, water, and time can turn into a loaf that’s warm, crusty, and full of life. In this beginner-friendly class, we’ll take the mystery out of sourdough and put the joy back into your kitchen. You’ll learn the tools of the trade, follow an easy recipe step by step, and discover the secrets to keeping your starter happy and thriving. Best of all, you’ll take home your own lively sourdough starter, a fermenting loaf ready to bake the next day, and a golden loaf fresh from the oven.

For those who want to set up their own home bread lab, optional starter kits ($65) will be available, packed with everything you need: a banneton, bowl with cover, scale, thermometer, starter jar, tea towel, dough scraper, spatula, and dough scorer. You will be asked about purchasing this kit when you register. If not purchasing a starter kit, please bring a large bowl and tea towel.

Come ready to roll up your sleeves, breathe in the aroma of fresh bread, and fall in love with the timeless craft of sourdough. Students under 18 must be accompanied by a registered adult.

*While sourdough does contain gluten, the fermentation process often makes it easier to digest for those who are gluten-sensitive though it’s still not recommended for those with celiac disease.

Britney Beaulieu believes that sourdough is part science, part art, part patience and all joy. She has spent the past year baking (and eating!) countless loaves, sharing them weekly with her community through Leaven Well. Britney loves experimenting with flavors, tinkering with techniques, and most of all, watching new bakers light up when their first loaf comes out of the oven. She’s excited to help beginners roll up their sleeves and fall in love with the timeless craft of sourdough.
