Explore the ideas, debates, and historical events that shaped the foundation of the United States in this engaging two-session class on the Constitution and American government. Using a balanced, non-partisan approach, participants will examine how Enlightenment thinkers such as Locke, Montesquieu, and Rousseau influenced the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
The first session will cover America’s colonial period through the Constitutional Convention, including the debates between Federalists and Anti-Federalists. The second session will explore the articles of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, constitutional amendments, and key Supreme Court decisions that shaped American government and daily life.

Kerry Kittel is a retired History and Civics teacher with a passion for helping others understand American history and government. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire and a Master of Arts in History from the University of Wisconsin–River Falls. Throughout his career, Kerry taught in the Amery School District for 11 years and the School District of New Richmond for 22 years before retiring in 2010. Since retirement, he has presented on the U.S. Constitution to a variety of community groups throughout the area, earning positive feedback for his engaging and informative presentations.
